10:53 am - Last Call scene...
|
I'm in for a donation!
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/filmyak/last-call-by-tim-powers-film-a-scene
If you'd like to make a donation to help M. Yanovich film one scene to use to pitch a larger version of Tim Powers' "Last Call", here is your chance. Kickstarter will accept donations until Tuesday, OCtober 11th. The goal is $35,000 to film one telling scene from the book, and the project is a bit over halfway to that goal, at a bit over halfway through the pledge period. I'm happy I could make a pledge!

Almost an entirely new crew! This is going to be fantastic!

I hope the new orchestra is working as hard as Lois' dancers...

10:08 pm - Free to GREAT home...
|

A feral kitten, abandoned under my mom's front porch deck, that she has been handfeeding and generally spoiling. We brought him home to Orange County today.
8 weeks old, vet approved, all shots current as of July 5th, 2011, this little baby will not be on the lot long before some lucky owner snatches him up!
Please hurry and contact me. It's mewing at me in a most appealing manner, and we have a cat already who has not adapted well to a second cat in the past, and we don't want Tip to lose his personality again...
Please, save us from teh kewt. This guy was born to be a housecat. He has already been lounging around on the bed with my wife... He rode over eight hours in the car today, and the only noise he made was a purring that could be heard above the idling engine at one of our coffee stops...
He's really a good kitteh...

One show. If you missed it, you missed a good one.

These people worked for well over two months. We had a full house, the orchestra pulled it all together, and the tech crew did a fully professional job. It was a good show.

3:45 pm - Gut-wrenching existential angstiness...
|
...always goes so well with lunch!
I expect my fellow employees to fall on one another at any moment and begin tearing at each others' hair and eyes in an internecine battle to the death.
Thanks, Wisconsin's state legislature! It turns out that shit really does run downhill, in this case all the way to the West coast! There's nothing quite like spending three entire days at work writing and responding to e-mails regarding violations of basic human courtesy, as well as Robert's Rules of Order, to have it all wrapped up nicely with a note from one fellow saying, basically, "See you all in an HR hearing! Wear your suit!"
It's not collective bargaining with us so much as collective, ineffective infighting after all the MOU's have been signed. We are the weakest bargaining group ever. Our strongest position we are allowed to take is "We really don't like that proposal. Can you change it?" You can imagine how often that works.
I love being an evil, over-pensioned, overpaid, under-worked government employee. I sure want to do my share to help pay off that big financial meltdown I created almost three years ago!
Where the heck was I going with this?
I can't ever remember it as being this bad, unless you count the time I had to help to try to get my boss fired, and then they ended up merely disciplining him until he finally quit himself. At least he gets to keep his pension! Mine's totally up for grabs at this point. To MY state government, CalPERS looks like the Money-Filled Piñata That Will Save California.
Fun times at ye olde job!

Friends, sad news.
One of my bandmates, Mark Hermann, has died of a heart attack.
We first met Mark and heard his talent when we first started going to Scott Smith's Open Mike Night seven or so years ago, and the past couple of years, Neal Lynch, Mark and I had gotten together as a trio to work out a lot of good music, gigging as Where's Mary, with an emphasis on Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary songs and that sort of thing...

When an opportunity came up at a local Irish pub/restaurant, we reconfigured our set list and started doing a regular gig as Porter Road, throwing in all the music we knew that had more of a Commonwealth nation folk bent.

Neal and I are going to continue with Porter Road, but our song book has ten or twelve songs in it that we simply won't be able to do without Mark's beautiful work on the twelve-string guitar, and his sure, strong harmony.
I know that CSNY's *Helplessly Hoping* will never quite be the same.

Here's Mark's Soundclick page... http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=283689
Go and listen to The Mary Ellen Carter (#15 in the list) if you have a few minutes. I'm proud to say that I turned him on to the music of Stan Rogers, because Mark's voice suited Stan's stuff so well...
The usual crowd is getting together at Open Mike Night tonight to remember you in song. I'll try to do justice to one of the songs you used to play, Black Velvet Band in DADGAD tuning, of all things, but I'm not the player you were...
Farewell, Mark. Thank you for your music.

9:21 am - Go, Crystal!

Crystal is applying for a dance scholarship at Cal State Fullerton. She asked me if I'd shoot a few audition videos for her...
Of course I would!
Here's Crystal performing the Esmerelda Variation:

She's a fine dancer, and I hope she gets that scholarship!
 Good luck, kid!

Two months of rehearsal, three shows, the rest is silence...
At no time did Christine and I do this during Chinese Dance.

But it was fun to do after the final curtain!

It was very nearly flawless. We had a stupendous show! The orchestra was FANTASTIC!

High fives were exchanged. Lois Ellyn does it again.
Also, I loves me my Crystal!

10:57 pm - A gig, a gig, a most palpable gig!
|
Patrick and Neal Sunday, November 14th, 2010 6pm to 8pm Branagan's Irish Pub Fullerton, California http://www.branagans.com/
My bandmate from Where's Mary, Neal, has been playing a solo gig at Branagan's for a few Saturdays now, and the owner was looking for someone to fill the Sunday spot, every other week. Neal suggested me, and I conversely talked him into helping me, because, while I know a lot of vaguely "Irish" songs, he's the real musician, and I frankly need the help.
So we're giving it a go, sans Mark, the other member of our usual trio, because he's already committed to another gig for a while. If it works out, we'll have a regular place to play all the "Irish-ey" stuff, and the Canadian stuff, and the British Isles stuff. It should be fun!
Stop by to hear Neal and I if you can! We've thrown this on last minute and will only have a couple of hours to go over some stuff that's completely new to Neal, so if nothing else, it'll be funny to watch us look at each other and shrug as we bash our way through some chorus songs!
